Applied Materials is the leading global supplier of products and services to the semiconductor industry. The company asked Larsen to update its corporate identity to evoke the company’s evolving brand position, and to create a visual system that would give the company a bold presence in a traditionally conservative industry.

The identity’s san-serif type, wide counters, and slightly squared forms convey stability, while its line weights harmonize with the stripes in the pre-existing “a” symbol. Applied Materials’ striking identity and bold new visual system was a huge success and was quickly adopted worldwide across print, digital, and experience communications.

STYLE GUIDELINES

To express the energy and momentum of the RIA industry, we’re using photographs of colored rays streaming upward at the speed of light. They move in concert to show that, together, we are UNSTOPPABLE . In any medium, our designs are spacious and uncluttered, using lots of white and blue with gold or light blue accents to highlight key content. The overall effect is energetic, optimistic, and as uncluttered as possible.

Core Value posters

After we re-branded Applied Materials, the square became the core element of their visual system. For a previous project, our team developed a square motif that encompassed the products and people stating that Applied is everywhere. The company loved it so much that we also used this motif to refresh the company's Core Value Posters, which were hung in the Applied Materials' buildings in Santa Clara.

Singapore facility signage

During my first year at Larsen, Applied Materials approached us to conceptualize an array of graphics through out their new facility in Singapore. I worked closely with our vice president of creative to envision facility graphics that will communicate the Applied Materials story.

In the main lobby entrance, we displayed three business segments: silicon, display, and energy. Each segment is represented by images of people and user-end products that wrap around three walls. The company's heart and soul embodies the entrance hallway with a photo montage of the logo and the mission statement. As the employees walk down the training floor hallway, photographs of systems brighten the walls. Thereafter, the Applied Materials' tagline is placed on frosted glass in the cafeteria lobby.

Tainan Facility Signage

Simultaneously, Larsen developed Applied Material's facility graphics for Singapore and Tainan. Our vice president of creative and I worked closely to develop three sets of six panels for employees to view as they walk along the hallway. These graphics had both English and Chinese translations. The other hidden gem was on the second floor, in which a lite alcove displayed the company's tagline.
